Iceland

Iceland has become one of the most visited countries at Europe, maybe worldwide. Some of you might ask why, but if you have been once, you will know. Impressive landscape, Volcanoes, Puffins, Glaciers, a number of most powerful Waterfalls might be the reason, but also the Golden Circle Tour. Gullni hringurinn as it is called by the locals, is one of the most popular Tours of the Island.

Golden Circle

If you are not staying for long or just plan to see the most popular attractions in one day, the Golden Circle Tour is the perfect choice. Most guided Tours are starting at the capital Reykjavík. They will bring you comfortably to Þingvellir Nationalpark, to the geothermal area with hotpots, Litli, the Great and Strokkur Geyser and Gullfoss by bus. Some tours enclude going to the volcanic crater Kerið. You can rent a rental car instead – no 4×4 wheel needed. You can take more time at the places then or have a stop to enjoy the landscape and iclandic horses. Road network and signs are excellent at Iceland. You will find all places easily, also enough parking slots infront of each place.

Starting at Reykjavík, Þingvellir might be your first stop. This place is about 40 km from the capital away and much more than just a nationalpark, listed on the UNESCO list of world heritage in 2004. Taking pictures while crossing European to Northamerican Continental Plate is a very popular shot taken there. As national assemblys took place since Viking age and the proclamation of the republic, it is also a historical place for the locals. Located at the Nationalpark you will find a cute litte waterfall named Öxarárfoss.

Litli, the Great and Strokkur Geyser

On the way to the Geysers at the geothermal area, you will pass the geothermal bath Laugarvatn Fontana. If you decided to go on tour by your own, you might put a shorter or longer stop here. It might be a good choice, it you are not panning to go to the Blue Lagoon, which is much more crowded and expensive. As Litli is just a „little“ Geysir and the great Geysir (Fountain up to 120 Meters / 393 Feet) rarly erupts, Strokkur Geyser is the most popular Geysir there. Strokkur Geyser erupts regulary about every ten minutes with Fontains up to 35 Meters / 115 Feet, sometimes several times in a row.

Gullfoss Waterfall – the golden Fall

Gullfoss (the golden Fall) is one of the most powerful and popular Waterfalls of Iceland. It is also listed at the Top 10 world ranking list of Waterfalls. The waterfall drops down over two cascades, which is half hidden, with a total height of 70 meters (230 feet). Walking down closer to the Waterfall, is going to show you more beautiful perspectives.

The volcanic crater was formed about 5000 years ago, with a depth of about 55 Meters / 180 feet. Seeping in water and rain formed an about 10 Meters / 32 feet deep lake with a diameter to about 250 Meters / 820 feet. Some guided tours are not going to visit this place, because of the entrance fee of about 3 € / 3,50 $.
