Iceland

As we went to Iceland for the first time, we fell in love and many times later, we are still obsessed. It is hard to find the right words to describe Iceland’s Beauty and diversity. Iceland has so much more to offer than Waterfalls, highlands and Puffins. Landscape, especially at Snaefellsnes Peninsula is unique and mindblowing. Never been to a place more peaceful where we felt as free as there. Whenever leaving we always feel like we haven’t seen everything the Island has to offer.

Circumnavigating Iceland, feels like going to the moon and back. Don’t miss to explore all attractions at Golden Circle, Diamond Circle and Reykjavík. Visit huge waterfalls, Landmannalaugar Highlands, Glaciers and unique churches. Watch Puffins, or just get lost at the hot springs. Try to find elves and trolls and maybe see golden Midnight Sun or Northern Lights.

Island

Best time to go to Iceland

Guflstream brings oceanic climate to Iceland, which means cool summers (about 12-15 degrees, not offen to 20 degrees) and modarate winters (about -3 to 0 degress). Traveling there depends on what you want to see. Be aware that weather is really, really changeable an take several layers with you. We went there in January (could be cold a little bit sometimes due to whipping wind), July and September. You should know that attractions, especially at the south located at ring road, are crowded through summer season.

How to get to Iceland

Iceland’s international airport Keflavík is located about 50 km southwest from the capital Reykjavík. Traffic is well regulated, so it’s easy to drive through Reykjavík and explore the island with a rental car.

The most northern capital of the world, with about 150.000 citizens,  is still a small, but  cultural capital. The capital‘s attractions Hallgrímskirkja (take the elevator to the top to take a look over the roofs of the city and to the harbour), the modern opera Harpa at the harbour, Sólfar, the Ráðhús with it‘s lake and ducks and swans infront and Perlan, are all worth going to.

Waterfalls of Iceland

You can find more than 1000 Waterfalls all over the island. Most of them can be spoted from car. If you want to know where to find the most popular ones and those, who impressed us personally have a look at the Waterfalls Blog.

Waterfalls of Iceland

Landmannalaugar – Iceland’s highlands

We took both popular routes to get to the colorful highlands. We prefered the way from the south because the landscape is more impressive, but in places not easy to drive and you have to cross a lot of rivers (stopped counting sometime). If you choose that way, it will take much more time, than from the north and a 4×4 Jeep is indispensable.

The route from the north is quiet good and partically tarred. Notice that the highlands can only be reached from End of spring to End of summer. Roads could be closed, depending on weather conditions.

Landmannalaugar – Island’s Hochland

Golden Circle Iceland

The Golden Circle Tour is an absolute tourist attraction because it can be done from Reykjavík easily in one day. The tour will take you to Þingvellir (cross the continental plate from Europe to Northamerica), the place where national assemblys took place since Viking age and the rebublic was proclaimed in June 1944. You will see the Geyser Strokkur and Gullfoss (the golden Waterfall) also. Some tours enclude going to the volcanic crater Kerið.

There are two mindblowing canyons, worth going to. Fjaðrárgljúfur is located in the south, not far away from ring road. It’s a natural reserve. Please follow the instructions of rangers and respect signs not to leave the paths. Múlagljúfur Canyon is located at the south also, but not easy to find. You should only go, if you have a lot of time. It takes a long hike furthermore.

To see Kolugljúfur Canyon you have to visit the northwest of the Island. Hvítserkur is not far away, but be aware of the tide. The hike to Stuðlagil Canyon is long, but easy to go and absolutely worth it. Ásbyrgi Canyon is a less crowded Canyon and still hidden gem at the Diamond Circle Tour.

Diamond Circle Iceland

People, who are visiting Iceland for a short stay are visiting well known attractions at the Golden Circle. Although they are easy to reach from the Capital Reykjavík, they are full of crowds. If you decided to go to Diamond Circle, you may enjoy spectacular places by yourself. Each place at the Circle – Goðafoss, Tjörnes, Ásbyrgi Canyon, Dettifoss, Grjótagjá, Sulfur springs and Mývatn, is a spectacular diamand.

This cute little village is a place, where you can find some of the most popular attractions at Iceland. To get an unbelievable view from above to Black Sand Beach and Reynisdrangar head to the church at the hill. Reynisfjara Beach with it’s impressive basalt columns and Dyrhólaey with the Lighthouse, rock gate and beach are not far away. Those places are also known to observe Puffins during breading season. Solheimasandur – the parking slot is located at ring road, but it takes a long walk to the plane wreck.

Iceland Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Snæfellsnes Peninsula has been a hidden gem for a long time. Located at the west of the Island, where amazing place to enjoy raw nature. You will find unique landscapes like Arnarstapi and the stone bridge, lighthouses and Jurassic coasts there. Stunning churches and Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall are waiting to be explored.

If you love churches or mystic places, there are some really cute one’s too. Grafarkirkja is the oldest of Iceland. Búðakirkja is a black church, located at the end of the world, as it seems. Þjóðveldisbærinn is a reconstructed farm house, which can be visited from 10am – 5pm. Ingjaldshólskirkja is spectacular located at the end of a road, infront of a stunning view.

Blue Lagoon is Iceland‘s most popular hot spring, but there are many others around the Island free of charge. We really enjoyed Seljavallalaug, a place where locals go to. Grjótagjá – the blue grotte is an experience, but bathing not permitted.
